How the math works

Each application is treated as its own small chance. If your rate is p, you need wanted interviews divided by p applications on average.

The chance of at least one interview after n applications is 1 minus (1 minus p) to the power n. For a 90% chance, n is the log of 0.1 divided by the log of (1 minus p), rounded up.

Real searches are lumpier than this. Rates move with your field, the season and how well each resume fits the job. Use the result as a planning guess, and update your rate after your first 30 or so applications.
