Best job search tools after a layoff

After a layoff, the best job search app is the one that costs little up front and keeps applications going while you handle everything else, and this page sorts the main options by that. Salvo is a free-to-start AI app that applies to jobs for you, rewrites your resume for each job and preps you for interviews.

What a layoff changes

Your search suddenly has a clock on it. Income stopped, severance may run out, and the volume of applications you need to send goes up just when your energy is low. So the questions that count are different from a casual search: What does it cost before it works? Does it send applications without you babysitting each form? Does it get your resume right for each job? Will it help when an interview request lands?

We compared apps on those points using each product's own site, fetched on 2026-10-05. We don't rank them. Prices can change, so check before you pay. If your employer offered outplacement help, Salvo also has an outplacement page.

If you want applications sent for you

Salvo. It finds jobs that fit rules you write, rewrites your resume for each job, applies for you and saves a submission receipt, so you can see what went out. It preps you for each interview. It's free to start with no card, and your first 2 interview requests are free, so you don't pay until the search is producing replies. After that, Turbo keeps replies unlocked at $14 weekly, $39 monthly, $89 every 3 months or $299 yearly. The 7-day trial needs a card and cancels in one click. The honest limit is job sites: it submits itself on Greenhouse, Workable and Ashby today, and more are coming. Each user gets a separate Salvo applicant email, so recruiter replies don't land in your personal inbox, and Salvo says it doesn't sell your data. See how Salvo applies and pricing for interview requests.

LoopCV. Cheap and open-ended. The free plan has no card and no time limit, and Auto-Apply runs on server-side scans, so it works while you're offline. It covers LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor and 30+ other boards (the homepage says 20+), and can send recruiter emails when a job has no form. Paid plans start at 9.99 EUR a month. Exact caps and per-job automatic resume rewriting aren't stated. If money is tight and you want the widest board list, LoopCV suits you better than Salvo.

JobCopilot. Pure volume, up to 50 applications a day, from $0.93 a day on Premium. Resume tailoring is automatic. An AI mock interviewer is included. A free trial isn't stated on its site.

Massive. Autopilot applies to up to about 200 jobs a month and builds a custom resume and cover letter for each. It has a visa-sponsorship filter, useful if a layoff put your work status at risk. Price and trial aren't stated on its own site.

Tsenta. Names nineteen ATS platforms including Workday and Lever, and the first 25 applications are free. You approve materials before it submits. If your targets sit on Workday, Tsenta covers what Salvo can't yet. See Salvo vs Tsenta.

If you want to apply by hand

Huntr. A tracker with a free plan: 2 tailored resumes, 2 application packets, tracking up to 100 jobs and autofill. Pro is $40 a month. Handy when you want every application and contact in one place.

Teal. A free tracker and resume builder, with AI tailoring to a job description and a match score. Teal+ is $13 a week or $29 a month. It doesn't apply for you.

Simplify. Free one-click autofill, and tailored resumes in Simplify+. Auto-submit isn't stated.

Frequently asked questions

What should I use first after a layoff?

Pick something free to start so you can test it before paying. Salvo is free to start with no card and its first 2 interview requests are free. LoopCV, Huntr and Teal also list free plans. Compare what each free plan covers.

Can an app apply to jobs for me while I rest?

Yes. Salvo, JobCopilot, LoopCV and Massive describe automatic submission. Tsenta submits after you approve. Salvo submits itself on Greenhouse, Workable and Ashby today, with more job sites being added.

What if I want to apply by hand?

Teal and Huntr track every application and have free plans. Simplify autofills forms for free. In each case you press submit yourself, which keeps full control and costs less or nothing.

Does Salvo help with interviews?

Yes. Salvo preps you for each interview, and live interview help (Cue and Listen) exists. Your first 2 interview requests are free, then Turbo keeps replies unlocked from $14 a week.
